James Dean remains a much loved style icon, nearly 60 years after his death. The original Rebel Without A Cause was responsible for one of the best trademark hairstyles Hollywood has ever seen and, as such, is still a great source of grooming inspiration for men today. Seriously, Ryan Gosling can't even compete with this guy.
Dean's hair had it all: volume, a slight wave and a pushed back, 'devil may care' sweep. The big question is, can it be replicated?
In short, yes it can. The slightly longer response includes a blow-dryer and a bit of patience for those of you with especially stubborn hair.
Get the cut
In order to achieve a James Dean-inspired look, you'll need the right haircut (and a leather jacket but that's entirely beside the point.) Ask your stylist to keep the sides at a medium length with the hair on top left longer. Ideally, you need a 2:1 top to sides ratio that is seamlessly blended.
Be aware that medium to thick hair with a slight wave lends itself perfectly to this style whereas very fine or flat hair won't hold up so well.
Get the style
While your hair is still wet, apply a small amount of pomade then comb it all back off your face. Add more product as needed but take care not to over do it.
You can let it dry naturally if your hair is especially thick or, for added volume, blow-dry while brushing the hair backwards. Complete any further sculpting with some more putty on your fingertips, then smooth down the back and sides to finish.
