If you want healthy and happy looking hair, heat protectant spray is an absolute MUST. Whether you're using a blowdryer, a curling iron, a flat iron or even a crimper, heat styling can dry your hair out, and leave your hair risk of split ends and hair breakage.

Secret weapon

Heat protection should be an important part of your styling routine. It can hard to remember this step so it's a good idea to keep your heat protectant in the same place as your heat styling tools. That way, you won't forget to apply it before every single time your use your flat-iron!

Damp hair? Beware!

Be warned, heat styling doesn't always go hand in hand with damp hair. Protective mousses for curls and volume are tailor-made for damp hair. They work best when applied to damp, towel-dried hair before a blow-dry.

Curling irons and flat irons do not mix with damp hair, however, so be sure to only use these tools on dry hair.

Heat styling with damp hair can damage the strand structure, breaking the shaft and causing hair to look dry and coarse. On the other hand, heat styling with totally dry hair can also dry the hair out and cause major damage. The solution? Before you straighten anything, make sure that your locks are at least 95 per cent dry and apply a generous amount of heatspray.

Dry hair?

As you'd expect, when heat styling with dry hair you absolutely need to apply a protectant, no excuses!

Taking a break from heat styling can work miracles for your hair, especially if feels dry to the touch or overworked. Be sure to get regular trims with your stylist to prevent split ends and to keep your hair healthy and happy. It's also a great idea to use an ultra-hydrating mask and allow your hair to dry naturally as often as possible, a little TLC goes a long way!

When you do go back into heat styling for the first time afterwards, however, remember to use a protectant every single time.
