What's better than one messy bun? Two, of course. 'Space' buns, or in other words, double buns (or even twin top-knots) are all the rage for fall 2016, as proven by celebrities like Cara Delevingne, Ciara, and Josephine Skriver. And while you may know the different types of double buns – messy and tousled, or sleek and put-together – actually achieving them could be a work in progress.
That's why we're showing you how to achieve space buns in just 7 simple steps. For a look that's out of this world, just part your hair down the middle and get ready to use each section to create two symmetrical top buns!
HAIR TUTORIAL: SPACE BUNS
To start off, remember that this style is most easily achieved when performed on day-old hair. Crimped or curly hair will also give your buns added texture, if you prefer. To begin, get yourself a rat tail comb to separate the hair down the middle.
Once you've parted your hair, take one side of your hair and tie it up so that it doesn't get in your way. Comb through the opposite side of your hair to make sure it isn't too frizzy, and run hairspray through your lengths using your fingers to get rid of any flyaways.
Gather the free section of hair and pull it up into a ponytail on the top of your head near your centre part so that the bun sits nicely on your head. If you need extra guidance, find the spot just before the arch of your brow, and run your finger in a straight line from the arch to the top of your head – that is where the bun should sit. Once you've pull your hair into a ponytail, pull out the hair near your ears to create a more natural, tousled look.
Next, pull the other side of your hair into a ponytail, making sure to match the ponytails so that your space buns line up at the end. Pull at the hair on top of your head to loosen it up for a messier look.
Tease your hair using a large brush by backcombing it towards your head. This will make your buns look bigger and create volume.
To start creating the buns, grab one ponytail on one side of your head, and wrap it around the base of your ponytail, shaping it into a bun. Secure the loose ends with bobby pins to keep the bun in place.
Repeat on the other side of your head, making sure that the buns are the same shape to ensure a symmetrical look. Spray any flyaways with hairspray, and there you have it! Two perfect messy buns!
