When sporting a show-stopping gown, the right hairstyle helps to balance and coordinate the whole look, tying the ensemble together. As you can see in the photos above, this can be achieved in a whole host of different ways.
Braids were a big deal on day one at Cannes. The winner of last year's Best Actress prize, Adèle Exarchopoulos, opted for a voluminous side braid. This style had plenty of height and a windswept matte finish. It made a great contrast to the patent black leather of her dress, maintaining the dramatic feel of her look without overwhelming it. Nicole Kidman, too, opted for a pretty side braid of sorts. The braid itself trailed along the nape of her neck, twisting into a chic side pony. It was an understated look that balanced her jeweled Armani Privé gown perfectly. Last, but by no means least, is Blake Lively's ponytail braid. Unkempt, high volume and so pretty is hurts, we just fell in love with this look. Again, it was a great teammate for her monotone Gucci dress.
Loose hairstyles also featured with Zoe Saldana sporting some artfully coiffed side-swept waves. The style was relaxed but not too laid back, framing her elegant makeup beautifully. Kendall Jenner, too, kept things fairly simple with a poker-straight 'do which was parted right down the middle.
Our favorite chignon of the evening belonged to Karlie Kloss. The Victoria's Secret Angel decided on a subtly windswept updo with romantically soft lines that only added to the mystical drama of her gown.
