Brushing your hair is probably one of those things you do without even thinking, like putting socks on or scrolling through your Facebook feed. The thing is, there are a few mistakes that are all too easy to make while running those bristles through your hair! Below are some of the major no-nos you should avoid for a happy, healthy mane.
1. Not preparing your hair
It might sound really obvious but detangling sprays can make brushing your hair a much smoother process - literally. Make sure you apply your chosen product evenly through the mid-lengths and ends before you reach for the brush.
Keeping your locks well hydrated with conditioner and the occasional hair mask, will also help make brushing them easier.
2. Brushing wet hair
When it's wet, your hair is a lot more vulnerable and stretches more easily than when it's dry. Try getting any major knots out with your fingers, then use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle the rest.
3. Using the wrong brush
If getting the brush through your hair is hard work, it could be because you're using the wrong one. Each brush has a different purpose, so you need to switch bristles depending on what you want to achieve. Take a look at our hairbrush glossary to find out which brush you need!
4. Brushing too much
Over-brushing your hair can cause damage, especially if you're making mistake number three. As a general rule, five strokes or less per section should be enough to detangle and smooth your hair. If this isn't enough, try using a wide-tooth comb to work out any knots, then switch to a brush to finish.
